She denied her mother's attempts to heal her, blocking the Scribe Virgin's ability with her own. In her reckless rage, she slipped and broke her back on the edge of the courtyard's fountain, paralyzing her from the waist down.
During one of their bouts, she unleashed her anger and frustration at her situation upon him. However, the Scribe Virgin wouldn't let her leave the Other Side, telling her that "destiny demands it."īored and lonely, Payne's only relief was when Wrath came to spar with her.
Upon waking her only words to her mother were not ones you would say to someone you cared for. When Phury broke with tradition and set the Chosen free, the Scribe Virgin woke Payne, thinking that it was time. Unsure what to do and wanting to protect her daughter from the fighting to which she was drawn, the Scribe Virgin put Payne into suspended animation for hundreds of years. Frantic that Payne would be taken advantage of and hurt, the Scribe Virgin told her that she would help her, but only if she returned to the Sanctuary. When the opportunity presented itself, Payne went to the Far Side where she killed the Bloodletter for what he did to Vishous.įree for the first time, Payne wanted to explore the world, but didn't realize her needing would come upon her almost immediately. She watched those who came for audiences with the Scribe Virgin and noted how she opened a portal for them to dematerialize through. Since she inherited the warrior instincts of her father, she was unhappy living amongst the Chosen because she was driven to fight and possessed none of the characteristics that were considered proper and appealing in a female. Vishous' younger twin sister, Payne, was raised on the Other Side.
